We have been trying to come up with a post for the last few days now. We have a lot to say on a whole host of subjects. But, some things we have noticed over the last few days points us to a new subject: America.

We, as a people, seem more divided now than ever before. The hate and ignorance and bigotry that is spewing from Americans is abhorrent. This country is in turmoil and has been for quite some time. We have obviously recovered from September 11th because we have reverted to our hating and hurting ways. We are turning our collective backs on each other. We are spreading blame wherever we can find a spot for it. We are hurling horrible and untruthful accusations at one another. We are in fight or flight mode…and we’re fighting the wrong fight.

One of the definitions for “American”, according to Merriam-Webster, is to be a “citizen of the United States”. There are a couple of other definitions but nowhere does it state that “American” means anything else other than being a resident here. But, the unofficial definition of being “American” is something quite different.

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

I still believe in these words. I think they hold truer today than in any time in history. One glaring difference is that these words are now directed at those of us living here, not just in other countries. Today a lot of Americans are the ones that are now homeless and tempest-tossed. We are yearning to breathe free. Free from the fear and the hate and the dark times that lay ahead. The question then becomes “What do we do about it”?

We could choose to keep things as they are knowing, full well that, in time, we will come out of the other side and start to rebuild what is left. There might not be much remaining, but we will still pick up the pieces. We could continue to fight amongst each other, as we have been, and destroy this country and what it stands for. Or, we could choose to fight back. Not against the government or our fellow Americans but against something that we can’t even see. It’s a feeling. Perhaps it’s even a knowledge that something is out there that is hurting us. It’s causing us pain and anguish and fear. We can’t see or hear it, but it’s there. We are lighting our torches and grabbing our pitchforks but we are not pointing them in the right direction. Instead, we are pointing them at each other because we don’t know to whom or what they should be pointed.

Let me offer a new target. Our thinking. Or, perhaps better stated, our way of thinking. The 10 year anniversary of 9/11 brought about innumerable articles and stories about what we all remember from that day. The fear and the pain and the panic. The despair and the sadness. But we also felt something else. Something even stronger. We felt unity. Yes, we felt United.

Again, there were countless articles and TV spots with people talking about how much kinder people were being to one another after the September 11th. People were going out of their way to help someone in need, no matter who it was. Smiles and pleasantries were exchanged. Hands were shook. We banded together to stay strong. We banded together to survive.

We need to get back to that place. We need to keep that fire burning just as bright as it ever did. We need to lift our lamps beside the golden door. Because, if we fail to do so, it will continue to destroy everything that we hold dear. We are not asking for miracles. We are not asking for the impossible. We are only asking that we try to set aside our differences for a while. We are simply asking for everyone to be a little more compassionate to each other. To understand that these are hard times for everyone. Not just a select few, but almost every American is hurting right now in some form or fashion and we need to stand together, as one, to make it through this with the spirit of our great country intact.

Democrats and Republicans, the religious and atheists alike, people of every color, the rich and the poor. Our disputes don’t matter right now because, as we argue amongst ourselves, our country is falling apart. What matters is not our differences but our commonality. Our differences divide us. Our commonality Unites us.

“…one Nation…indivisible…”

Changes are coming…

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Hello to everyone! We apologize for not posting in a while but we have been extremely busy the last couple of months and updating the website seems to be the first thing to get left behind. We have had projects going on all over the country and it’s been really time consuming to coordinate. We have been trying our best to get to everyone’s emails and phone calls but we know we are a bit behind. We will get to you; it just might take us a little time.

Some changes are coming to WGTTH. We are in talks with a group that will eventually take over the day-to-day operations of WGTTH. We have grown too quickly and expanded too fast to be able to responsibly handle all the calls for help and emails from wonderful volunteers that want to give their time. We never imagined we would get this big or that we would be able to help so many people and it’s time we hand it over so that it can grow into what it needs to be. Until the changeover, Michelle and I will continue to coordinate all of the projects.

We have calls from 6 different countries wanting to start chapters. We have had requests for help from all four corners of the world. We have been running WGTTH out of our home for the last 2+ years and it’s time the operation was up scaled to meet all of the requests for help we receive. We want to be able to get to everyone that emails or calls and it’s becoming increasingly difficult. We will not leave anyone behind and we will get to each and every person that has contacted us.

As soon as we work out more details about the changeover we will let everyone know. The concept is not changing. The mission is not changing. The purpose is not changing. We just need some help in running WGTTH. People with more experience and knowledge than we have are going to make sure that no email or phone call will go unanswered.

Please continue to contact us. Let us know if you need help or you would like to lend a hand. We will get back to you. It might take us a little while but we will be in touch as soon as we can.

Keep paying it forward as often as you can and a huge thank you to all of those around the country that have given their time, skills, compassion, knowledge and sweat to help those in need in your communities. You are the backbone of this country and the hope for our collective future.

Social Networking for the Rest of Us

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Running the risk of stating the obvious, it’s a new year. It’s time for New Year’s resolutions, planning for the future, and trying new things. It’s time to tweak and tinker with things to try and make 2011 an even better year. Don’t get me wrong, last year was a tremendous and wonderful year both personally and professionally. But, as a person that believes in evolution, it’s time to evolve.

I think a lot of people see all of this technology that surrounds us as evolution. Some of it is. Some of it isn’t. One area that is growing exponentially is social media. With more and more social media networks popping up all the time we can connect easier, reach out to those far away, and do things we never dreamed possible just a few years ago. It’s truly amazing. In fact, social media allowed me to connect with my dad whom I haven’t spoken with in 20 years.

We are not against social media at all. Social media also allows us at We’ve Got Time to Help to reach out to those all over the world. We can post projects on our website, email volunteers, tweet about someone that needs help. We post this information and then watch it spread like wildfire. It’s like having a million neighbors and we can knock on all of their doors at once.

We have a Facebook page. We have a Twitter account. We have multiple blogs, two websites, a dozen email addresses, Skype, YouTube, Flickr, Craigslist, etc. These are all wonderful tools to have in our tool box, but they aren’t the only tools we need. There’s the rub.

Back to evolution. To evolve, we must grow. Whether that’s mentally, physically, spiritually, etc. we must grow to evolve. It’s the very nature of evolution. We must embrace these new tools we have at our disposal. We must learn to use them in a way that is beneficial to us and those around us. But while evolving we run the risk of losing other parts of us that are just as important. Just as if a caterpillar, when it completes its metamorphosis into the butterfly, were to grow knives for wings. Sure it would be evolution, but it wouldn’t benefit anyone.

There are so many upsides to social media that we couldn’t possibly list them all. It has changed the world and mostly for the better. But I fear that we, as a species, are growing knives for wings. Our reach is far greater than it used to be, but we are severing ties with our sharp wings at the same time we are creating them.

That’s where the New Social Media comes into play. In this New Social Networking group, we walk across the street to speak with our neighbors, instead of Facebooking or tweeting. We stop strangers on the street that look like they could use a hand or a kind word. We lend a hand, not virtually, but physically to those that could use it. Go back to the days of barn raising.

Perhaps evolution isn’t the right term. Maybe we actually need to devolve for a little while. As the old AT&T (social networking, anyone?) commercial used to say “Reach out and touch someone.”

Refresher Course

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Because we have had so many emails and call about what we do and how we do it, this is just a little refresher course on how We’ve Got Time to Help works.

First of all, we don’t accept money for any project. The people that contact us are in need, sometimes desperate. They don’t have the resources to change their situation and that’s where we come in. The only type of payment we accept is “Pay it Forward”. All that we ask from someone we help is to Pay it Forward when they have a chance.

We will try to help with any need that someone has. Obviously, we are a community organization and not some huge non-profit, so we can’t help with financial assistance, but we will try our best with everything else. We believe that there is a surplus in the country; we just need to harvest it.

One of the biggest things we offer is hope. We get so many calls and emails from people that are at the end of their rope. Some even want to end it all. We let them know that there are people that care about them, even if they are complete strangers. We care about them, their situation, and we are there to help them with whatever they need to get back on their feet. We will stand with them until they can walk on their own.

We will not turn down anyone, for any reason. We don’t have a litmus test. We don’t ask how much you make a year or what kind of car you drive. We don’t say “we can’t help you” because of where you live or what kind of job you have. We don’t send you away because you don’t “qualify” for help. We all need a hand up now and then and that’s just what we are here to do.

We don’t ever discriminate for any reason. Race, religion, political beliefs, yearly income, etc. etc. We will help anyone, that we can, that asks for it.

We exist not only to help people in need but ourselves, as well. When a person can walk away from their own pain and fear to help someone else in need, the rewards are too great to mention. If you are unemployed/under employed/employed, we all know what that’s like. The stress and fear that you live with everyday is immense. But, when you push that aside, to help someone else, that fear and suffering seem to go away. It seems to disappear completely.

Like we said, this is just to answer the main questions we get. If you have other questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at wevegottimetohelp@q.com.

We hope this helps and we look forward to working with each and every one of you!

Take care of yourself, and your neighbor,

Seth and Michelle

A New Community

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Part 1

Where do we stand today? Yes, we are still in a world of hurt. Oregon’s unemployment numbers stand at about 10.2% (the actual number is much higher). National unemployment is still too high. Homes are still being foreclosed at an unbelievable rate. People are going hungry. Families are being uprooted. People are in desperation mode. Rome is burning.

But. Yes, but. There is a new type of community rising from the ashes and debris. A community that is more engaged, more involved, and more compassionate. A community that refuses to live in fear. This community doesn’t turn its back on neighbors that are hurting. It doesn’t walk away from the challenges that lie ahead. It stares into the abyss and says “I will be a shining light in all of this darkness”.

Just as in World War I and II, we are beginning to plant Victory Gardens. Not just in the literal sense (although, we are staring those, too). These are a new type of Victory Garden. These new gardens are being planted by people in neighborhoods and communities all over this country. These new gardens are planted with seeds of hope and faith. Hope that we will rebound from this economic disaster, just as we have rebounded in the past. Hope that a better future lies ahead. Faith in one another. Faith that, if we come together, we will not only be able to recover from these hard times but that we will, in fact, prosper.

For the unemployed, times are about as hard as they come. Not only are they struggling to find a job, any job, but a lot of people have their family to worry about. How can I put food on the table? How can I keep a roof over our head? How are we going to survive? With all of this weight on your shoulders, it is too easy to crumble under the pressure. It’s so very easy to lose hope. So very easy to lose yourself. I speak from experience.

Here comes another big “but”. But, when these unemployed people step away from their stress, pain, fears, and frustrations to help another in need the results are phenomenal. When these wonderfully strong individuals, who are struggling just to make it through another day, take a few minutes or hours to help a fellow human being in their time of need the transformation is amazing. These unemployed people go from hopeless to hopeful. From fearful to fearless. From enervated to energized. Again, I speak from experience.

Part 2

How many times have you passed by someone that you thought was in need? Someone that looked like they could use a little help? We’ve all done it. We think “Oh, I’m sure “someone” is coming to their aid”. Or, “someone else” will help them. It’s time for us all to stop waiting for “someone” to come along. It’s time for us to stop thinking that “someone else” will do the rescuing.

We the people are the rescuers now. We, the community members all across this country, are the ones that have a chance to step up and offer a hand up to those who need it. We have a chance to reach out and offer any help we can. Every time you help another, every time you offer your help and support and compassion to those in our communities that are suffering, you plant a seed in this country’s victory garden.

Think of yourself as a gardener of sorts. Those of us with time, energy, and a willingness to help are the ones that are reseeding this nation. We are the people that are tending to the withering and dying around us. We offer food and water and nourishment. We offer hope and compassion and encouragement.

Because, just as when you are tending your own garden, you don’t only tend to the strongest. You don’t only offer water and food to the healthiest. Just the opposite, actually. You offer more help to those that are suffering. You pay special attention to the small and frail.

Let’s all go out and tend our garden.

Warming Shelter coming soon!

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

We have a call for assistance! The Eastminster Church is looking for some help staffing their warming shelter that will open up November 1st. This is not just your ordinary church. The church is partnering with Human Solutions to open this shelter. As the church states they are “A Caring Church in a Changing World”. And they are. You can read a Tribune article here: http://www.portlandtribune.com/news/story.php?story_id=128337193360646300

This church, located at 12505 Northeast Halsey Street, is transforming their image from a “regular” church into a center for the community. A community center that cares about the Portland area. What we, as community members, are going through. Our struggles. Our battles. These wonderful people care about our future.

Please support them in any way you can. Any help would be invaluable to others going through a rough spot in their lives. Or, if you don’t feel like you have the time or goods, any monetary  help you could give would be phenomenal! Donate time, energy, or even money to further this wonderful cause. If you would like to sign up for the homeless shelter, please contact us at wevegottimetohelp@q.com or call 503-953-6018, or contact the church (and Brian) directly at 503-252-3888 and we will get you set up!

Anything that you can give would be helpful. Do you have some extra canned or boxed food in your cupboards? How about going through your closet and seeing what you don’t wear anymore. These unworn clothes, or uneaten food, donation you could make would be extremely helpful.

Please support these organizations. They are doing such wonderful and important work. Please join us in our fight to regain a community!

Not affiliated with any cause other than humanity,

Seth and Michelle

Thanks to everyone!

On Friday morning, a group of us met at a project site to spread some gravel for a neighbor in need. The side of their home gets to be a muddy and dangerous slope when it rains. One of our volunteers, Meri, suggested that we lay down some gravel to combat the problem. We put the call out for help and you answered!

It took us 2 pickup loads full of gravel but we finished the project in just a couple of hours. We finished so quickly because of the hard work put in by so many volunteers.

A big and heartfelt “Thank you” to Meri, Julie, Mel, Louanne, Inman, David, Daniel and Seth.

Another successful group project completed!

Trying to change the way we think

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

One of the first things that we talked about when we started this group earlier this year was attempting to change they way we all look at different situations and how we view this world. Not only would we be able to help others in need with things like home repair, but maybe also help people see this new world in a new light.

If we could all just slow our pace down a little and take time to notice our neighbors around us, we think this could be a much better place to live. We have really tried to change the way we think. Noticing the homeless person that needs some food, a neighbor that needs a hand with some yard work or even a complete stranger that just looks like they could use a kind word. Before we started this group, we never saw these things. We were too caught up in out own lives to even notice those around us. Now, after working on it, we seem to have a completely new set of eyeballs. They see things that they never saw before. We are paying attention.

There is no feeling in the world like being able to help someone that needs it. Whether it’s something big or just a little gesture, it all makes you feel connected.

It’s so easy to pass by someone and not even give them a second glance. Next time you see someone who looks like they could use a hand, please stop and take just a minute or two to offer your help. It’s a very scary thing to do for a lot of people (including Michelle and I). To step out of your “comfort zone” and go up to a complete stranger and offer help. Sometimes we still have to physically stop walking, turn around and go back to the person.

Here’s a few actual excuses that we (Michelle and Seth) have used in the past:

“Oh, we’re really busy” or “we need to get to the next place we’re going”
“They probably don’t need help”
“They look too upset to talk to right now”
“I’m sure someone is coming to help them”
“They have probably already called someone”
“We shouldn’t get involved”
“It looks too personal”
“I can’t help them” or “I wouldn’t know how to help”
“I don’t want to embarrass them” or “I don’t want to be embarrassed”

There are many, many other excuses that we have used in the past not to help someone. Usually, it all stems from fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of doing or saying something wrong. The only fear that we should really have is the fear of walking away from someone that needs help.

Starting Fresh

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Welcome to everyone stopping by. We hope that you are here because you have a willingness and a need to try and make our communities better places to live.

I (Seth) have to apologize for not keeping this movement rolling forward. We were going so strong for so long and then, for myriad reasons, I settled into a pretty nasty bout of depression and, honestly, my alcoholism took over.

I have struggled with alcoholism for many, many years now. My propensity for drinking, coupled with the fact that I have been unable to find a job for 9 months, sent me spiraling downward. I lost the ability to act on anything. It was a major struggle just to get out of bed in the morning.

I, with a world of help from Michelle (thank you, sweetheart), am starting to turn things around now. Between medication and counseling, I am feeling great and getting stronger everyday. I am ready to restart this movement and get things rolling again.

Again, I apologize if I let anyone down. I hope that I can start to make a difference again.

Over the next few days, we will be updating our project list and will also be sending out emails to our volunteers (read: neighbors) so that we can get moving on some projects. Please let us know if you can help or if you know of any projects that we could get involved with.

I struggled with whether or not to talk about my problems on here. I thought about it for some time. I finally decided to, partially, in hopes that it may help someone else if they are going down a similar road. None of us are immune to having problems and it’s good to remind yourself of that every now and then. We are all human and very prone to not always making the right decisions.

Please feel free to write us at wevegottimetohelp@q.com with any questions you have or to sign up for our email updates. We will be sending out some emails in the next few days describing some new projects and updates on others.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to help their neighbors and have done all they can to help their communities.

Take care and we hope to see you all soon!

Seth and Michelle

Busy, busy, busy

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

There are a lot of events and projects coming up this month, so please take a few minutes to look at everything that is going on. We will get right to it!

1) The Portland Upside debuts this Friday, May 8th. The creators of the newspaper, Rob and Sara, are looking for some help distributing the 10,000 printed copies all around town. If you can take a few copies to your local neighborhood hangout, or you are willing to drive around town and drop off a lot of copies to different places, that would be great. Just email Michelle and I or contact the Portland Upside directly at portland.upside@gmail.com

2) There is an East Portland Neighborhood Association Annual Clean-up event this Saturday, May 9th, going from 9am-1pm. The event is happening in the Albertson’s parking lot on NE 122nd and Halsey. They need some volunteers to help with the event and it’s also a great way to get rid of anything just lying around your house. They are accepting: Yard Debris; Wood; Metal; Bicycles. It is $10 per car load and $20 per truck load. Proceeds will be put right back into the local neighborhoods. Let us know if you can make it!

3) Another May 9th project is being put together by F.I.D.O. (Friends Involved in Dog Outreach). They are a wonderful organization who help not only Clackamas County residents, but anyone in the Portland Metro area. They are looking for volunteers to join them at the new shelter for a “Landscape Beautification Party”! Rain or shine, from 10 am until ??
Diana Hallmark is offering sneak preview tours of the new facility as well as hot dogs, hamburgers (and veggie burgers), soda and water. They will be planting and digging and generally playing in the mud, so bring gloves, shovels and other tools as appropriate (knee pads?). Please dress for the weather and plan to have a fun day working and getting to know more about FIDO & meeting other volunteers.

They have several other projects they would like to complete, if they can get enough volunteers.
Also, if you have a wheel barrow that you can bring, that would be great. They hope to be moving gravel and creating a pathway or two. Just let us know if you can make it. It really is a terrific cause!

4) Also on Saturday, May 9th there is a benefit auction for Rose Haven, a women’s and children’s shelter. They need 2-3 volunteers to help with the event on Saturday night, between 4pm – 10:00pm. There will be food for the volunteers as well as raffle prizes, and everyone will get to enjoy the entertainment as well. Please contact Ellen at 503 784-6192 if you can help!

5) One of our volunteers is the lead singer in a band called The Augmentors. She and her band are having their first Portland show on Sunday, May 10th starting at 9pm. The venue is the Mississippi Pizza Pub at 3552 N. Mississippi. We would love to get a big group of us down there to see her show and to support her. It should be a lot of fun! Think you can make it?

6) On Wednesday, May 20th, we will be hosting our next Meet and Greet here at our home. We would love for everyone to be able to attend. The meet and greet will be from 11am-3pm. Just let us know if you can make it! Let’s make this the best meet and greet yet!

7) We have had a few professionals donate some services to our volunteers. First is Ario with Unbound Bodywork and Massage. He has offered to give 2 or 3 free massages, per week, to We’ve Got Time to Help volunteers that go out on any projects! How cool is that? You can contact him directly and let him know that you would like to set up an appointment. His contact info is: Phone: 503 841 2556 and email: ariolynch@gmail.com

Also, Peter Chee of Peter Chee Photography, has offered to take photos/head shots of any of our volunteers who need them for job hunting or attaching to resumes (again, for free). You can email Peter at peter@petercheephotography.com to set up a time to have your photo(s) taken. Anything to help in these slow economic times!

We also have a licenced counselor who is willing to speak with people that need someone to talk to. Please email Jennifer at jenniferblakecounseling@gmail.com and let her know what you need. What a tremendous and generous offer from Jennifer.

8) We have added a few new projects and we could sure use quite a few volunteers for a whole host of Projects coming up. You can take a look at the Project Page to see if there is something that you can help with. There is everything from gardening to construction to driving. Please see if you have a few extra hours in your week to help out some of these wonderful people!

We’ve had a few Projects sitting on the table for a while and Michelle and I have been trying to get to them all, but we need some help. Just email us at wevegottimetohelp@q.com to let us know what you can help with.

And last, but certainly not anywhere near least, we are going to start a Monthly Volunteer Day where will be going to one of our volunteers homes and giving them a hand with anything they need help with. We have our first nominee for May (we are keeping it a secret, though) and we will be sending out information as the day draws closer. So neighbors, start thinking about what you would like or need to get done around your home and let us know. This will be a small way to give back to all of you that have donated your time, energy and ideas to those in need!

Thank you to all!

Contact us for any reason at wevegottimetohelp@q.com
